Gachagua: Ruto used to cry in my house begging me not to leave him

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has sensationally claimed that President William Ruto once broke down in tears at his home in a desperate plea for political support in the run-up to the 2022 general elections.

Speaking during an interview on The Obinna Show on Friday night, Gachagua accused President Ruto of using emotional manipulation and deception to secure his loyalty at a time when pressure was mounting for him to return to Uhuru Kenyatta’s political camp.

“In politics, I have seen it all. The man came to my home in Wamunyoro, knelt down, and cried real tears,” Gachagua revealed.

“He begged me not to leave him. He said, ‘My brother, I beg you. I’ve suffered. I’m a good man. I’m a Christian. Let us walk together.’”

According to Gachagua, Ruto feared losing his backing due to Gachagua’s close ties with then-President Uhuru Kenyatta, for whom he once served as a personal assistant.

He claimed that despite having a spiritual leader — Pastor Dorcas Rigathi — in his home, Ruto would insist on praying for his family, actions Gachagua now believes were part of a calculated deception.

“I entered into an agreement with him purely on trust. Nothing was written down,” he said. “He was so convincing – so emotional. You see a grown man crying, and it moves you. That’s why I agreed to help him.”

The Fallout

Gachagua, who has since fallen out with President Ruto, said the experience has changed him deeply, especially in how he approaches trust and loyalty in politics.

“When people visit me now, I scrutinize them. I’ve become very cautious,” he said. “His portrait still hangs in my house — not out of admiration, but as a permanent reminder to never be deceived again.”
