People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua has claimed she was denied entry into Tanzania on Sunday, May 18, 2025.

In a social media update posted Sunday morning, Karua stated that she, along with human rights defenders Gloria Kimani and Lynn Ngugi, was detained upon arrival at Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam. “I have been denied entry into Tanzania and I and two colleagues are awaiting deportation at Mwalimu Nyerere International Airport Dar es Salaam,” Karua wrote in a tweet.

The trio was reportedly traveling to Tanzania following an invitation from the East Africa Law Society. However, upon arrival at approximately 9:00 am, Karua said she encountered immigration challenges. Her passport was handed over to a supervisor by an official, who then kept her waiting for an hour while she “consulted her superiors.”

According to Karua, those superiors ultimately declined to allow her entry into the country.
