The Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB) has issued a sweeping ban on the use of celebrities, influencers, and content creators in gambling advertisements, in a move aimed at curbing the glamorization of betting.

In a press release dated May 29, 2025, the Board stated:
“Gambling adverts SHALL NOT glamorise betting or use celebrities, influencers and content creators to endorse or promote gambling.”

The directive, which applies to all media platforms, is part of a broader crackdown on irresponsible gambling promotion. According to the BCLB, the new rules are designed to protect vulnerable groups—particularly minors and the youth—from being lured into gambling by flashy or misleading endorsements.

As part of the updated regulations, all gambling advertisements must be submitted to the BCLB for approval and will also be forwarded to the Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) for classification before airing or publication.

BCLB Chairperson Dr. Jane Makau emphasized the importance of responsible messaging in betting promotions, underscoring that all advertisements must carry clear warnings and avoid portraying gambling as glamorous or a guaranteed path to success.
