Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has officially launched his long-awaited political outfit, the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), positioning it as his new vehicle for the 2027 presidential race.

The DCP brand features neon green, brown, and white colors, with the slogan “Skiza Wakenya” (Listen to Kenyans). The party’s logo depicts an ear with fingers cupped around it—symbolizing attentiveness to the voice of the people.

Gachagua will serve as the party leader, supported by a mix of former legislators and Cabinet officials in interim roles.

Former Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala has been named Deputy Party Leader, while former Agriculture CS and Meru Senator Mithika Linturi takes on the role of National Organising Secretary.

Other key appointments include:

  • Cate Waruguru (former Laikipia Woman Rep) – National Women Leader
  • Maina Kamanda (former Starehe MP) – Chair, Council of Eminent Persons
  • David Mingati – National Chairperson
  • Peter Mwathi and Sarah Owino – Deputy Chairpersons in charge of Strategy and Operations, respectively
  • Hezron Obanga – Secretary General, assisted by Martin Ole Kamwaro
  • Anna Mutua – National Treasurer, deputised by Evangeline Njoka and Tomwas Nyangi

Gachagua’s formation of DCP follows his recent resignation from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), signaling an escalating political battle between him and President Ruto for control of the Mount Kenya vote bloc.

“The time to listen to Kenyans has come,” Gachagua said during the launch. “This party will be the voice of the people, especially those who feel left behind.”

The former deputy president is expected to begin an aggressive grassroots mobilisation campaign, especially in the central Kenya region, as he seeks to position DCP as a serious contender in the 2027 general elections.
