Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has found himself at the center of a corruption storm after being charged with multiple graft-related offenses at the Milimani Chief Magistrate’s Court in Nairobi.
Natembeya is facing two counts of conflict of interest and a third count of unlawful acquisition of public property—charges that stem from questionable financial dealings linked to companies doing business with the county government.
According to the charge sheet, between January 1, 2023 and April 30, 2025, Natembeya allegedly received over Sh1.1 million indirectly from Mercy Chelangat, the director of Lyma Agro Science Limited and proprietor of Maria Stores—both of which traded with the county.
In a second count, the Governor is accused of benefiting from Sh2.1 million through Emmanuel Wafula Masungo, the beneficial owner of Easterly Winds Limited, another firm that had dealings with the county.
The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) also alleges that Natembeya unlawfully acquired Sh3.2 million in public funds, said to be part of payments made by the county to Chelangat’s business.
Appearing before Magistrate Charles Ondieki, the Governor pleaded not guilty to all charges. However, the state opposed his release on bond, arguing that he poses a risk of interfering with witnesses, evidence, and the ongoing investigations.
The court is expected to rule on his bail application in the coming days as the high-profile case unfolds.
