The National Police Service (NPS) and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have accused Juja Member of Parliament George Koimburi of orchestrating his own abduction for political gain.
In a joint statement issued by Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja and DCI Director Amin Mohamed, the authorities claimed their investigation into the May 2025 incident revealed significant inconsistencies that disproved the alleged kidnapping.
Addressing journalists at DCI headquarters on Kiambu Road, Amin Mohamed revealed that surveillance and tracking efforts traced Koimburi’s movements with precision, contradicting his abduction claims.
“Fortunately, we’ve been able to expedite the investigations and to expose him to the public that the MP was indeed not abducted,” Mohamed said.
“We were able to account for all his movements from the time he attended church up to where he slept at night. We have identified the hotel and the room number where he slept.”
According to police, further doubts arose when investigators were denied access to interrogate the MP while he was hospitalized following the alleged ordeal. Investigators believe Koimburi, an ally of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, staged the abduction to create political tension and attract public sympathy.
A key breakthrough came through the interrogation of three suspects: Juja CDF Chairman Peter Kiratu, Cyrus Kieru Muhia, and Karanja Gatana. Authorities say the trio played instrumental roles in executing the fake abduction.
Muhia, who runs a supermarket in Kahawa West, told investigators that on May 24, he was contacted by Kiratu and asked to provide his Subaru Forester for what he was told was additional security for the MP during a church event in Mugutha.
On May 25, Muhia was again instructed to meet Gatana—who was driving Kiratu’s Honda CRV—and three unidentified men. After scouting the church route, they returned, only for Muhia to receive a call later instructing him to drive the Subaru with two men back to the church.
Upon arrival, chaos unfolded.
“The two men exited quickly, and he heard screams as the MP was forced into the vehicle,” police reported.
The group then drove toward Jacaranda Coffee Research via Kambogo Road, where they stopped near the Honda CRV. There, the MP transferred vehicles, leaving Muhia with the two accomplices, who allegedly threatened him against speaking to authorities.
Investigators believe this was a coordinated effort led by the MP and his associates to stage a false abduction.
The police have pledged to take appropriate legal action against MP Koimburi once the investigation concludes.
