Controversial preacher Bishop Gilbert Deya, infamous for the global “miracle babies” scandal, has died in a tragic road accident along the Kisumu-Bondo road.
Deya’s SUV was crushed on the spot at the notorious Namba Kapiyo blackspot near Holo after a runaway trailer, reportedly suffering brake failure, rammed into his vehicle on Tuesday.
According to witnesses, the articulated lorry lost control while descending the slope and slammed into the bishop’s vehicle, leaving it mangled beyond recognition. Emergency responders who arrived at the scene confirmed that Deya died instantly.
The late bishop was a polarizing figure both in Kenya and abroad, rising to international notoriety in the early 2000s after claiming he could help infertile women conceive through “miracle babies” — a claim that led to investigations and his eventual extradition from the UK to face charges of child trafficking in Kenya.
At the time of his death, Deya was still facing legal battles related to the scandal.
Police have since launched investigations into the crash as questions mount over the roadworthiness of the trailer and the safety of the stretch of road where the accident occurred — an area long considered a high-risk blackspot by motorists.
More details on the accident and funeral arrangements are expected to be released by the family in due course.
