A 14-seater matatu ferrying school children overturned on Thika Road near Garden City Mall on Monday morning, triggering panic and a major traffic jam during peak hours.

According to eyewitness reports, the matatu—painted in a bright pink color—was allegedly speeding when the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to flip and land on its roof. The vehicle was reportedly heading toward TRM Mall direction when the incident occurred.

Passersby and first responders quickly mobilized to assist, rescuing the children from the wreckage. Videos and images widely shared online showed the visibly shaken students seated by the roadside, awaiting further medical attention.

While it is still unclear whether any of the children sustained serious injuries, several were rushed to nearby hospitals for checkups and treatment.

The crash caused a significant traffic snarl-up along Thika Road as police officers, local authorities, and boda boda riders worked together to clear the wreckage and direct traffic.

Authorities have yet to release an official statement on the cause of the accident or confirm the number of injured individuals. Investigations are ongoing.
