A ten-year-old girl tragically lost her life after a perimeter wall collapsed on her in the Kiawara slums of Nyeri County. The incident occurred on July 1 as the girl and her four-year-old sister were playing near the unstable structure in the Mukaro area.
According to a police report, the wall gave way without warning, crashing onto the two young girls. Good Samaritans quickly rushed the children to the hospital, but sadly, the older girl succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment.
Her younger sister was admitted in serious condition and is currently receiving intensive medical care.
Police confirmed that the children’s mother was not at home at the time of the incident. The body of the deceased was moved to the mortuary, where an autopsy is expected to be conducted in the coming days.
“We are treating this as an active investigation,” a local police officer told reporters. “We are working to determine what caused the collapse and whether negligence played a role.”
This tragedy has raised fresh concerns about safety in informal settlements.
