NAIROBI, KENYA, JULY 2, 2025 – Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i has strongly refuted claims that he is a political project of former President Uhuru Kenyatta, as speculation mounts over his expected run for the presidency in the 2027 General Election.
In an exclusive interview aired on Citizen TV on Tuesday night, Dr. Matiang’i declared that he is not aligned with any political party and is currently holding consultations across the political divide.
“I am in consultations with a number of political parties and a number of political leaders across the board,” Matiang’i stated. “If I made a choice now and stuck to one political party, I would disadvantage the others with whom we are having discussions.”
He emphasised that his strategy is to build broad-based support before committing to any single political faction, despite mounting pressure and speculation.

Open to Coalitions, But No Endorsements Yet
Matiang’i, who held three ministerial dockets under President Uhuru Kenyatta’s 10-year rule, clarified that while he had a close working relationship with the former Head of State, this did not mean he was seeking or depending on Uhuru’s endorsement.
“There are things that people tell you that, when you sit back and analyse them, they won’t make sense even to a fool,” said Matiang’i. “It is an indelible historical fact that Uhuru appointed me to his Cabinet and I served for 10 years in three portfolios. But so did many others, some of whom are now in the current government.”
The former CS’s remarks are seen as an attempt to distance himself from tribal kingpin politics and position himself as a national candidate.
