Police in Nairobi are investigating the death of a 17-year-old girl who passed away shortly after complaining of severe stomach pain in the Kware area, Embakasi South constituency.
Tragic End After Health Complications
According to police reports, the teenager had allegedly undergone an unsafe abortion in her home county of Kitui before traveling to Nairobi in search of further medical treatment.
She was initially taken to a private hospital within the Kware slum but was later referred to Kenyatta National Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
The girl’s identity is being withheld due to the sensitive nature of the case and her age.
Body Taken to Mortuary for Autopsy
Her body has been moved to a city mortuary pending a postmortem examination. Investigators say the autopsy will help determine the exact cause of death and whether the abortion was directly involved.
Rise in Unsafe Abortions in Informal Settlements
Authorities have expressed concern over the rising cases of unsafe abortions in Nairobi’s informal settlements. Health experts cite limited access to safe reproductive services, stigma, and lack of sex education as contributing factors.
Human rights groups and health advocates have long called for improved reproductive health policies and accessible, confidential services for adolescents.
