Kiwadani, Kilifi Town – July 24, 2025: A gang ambushed a police constable, causing serious injuries while he was heading to work early Wednesday morning in Kiwadani, a neighborhood in Kilifi Town that has seen a spike in violent robberies.
Kilifi County’s security agencies have prompted an immediate response to the attack, which a criminal group carried out while preying on early-morning pedestrians.
Officer Rushed to Hospital After Brutal Assault
Sources within the Kilifi Police Command said that a group of unknown men suspected to be part of a gang operating in the area surrounded and assaulted the officer as he was walking to his duty station.
“He was attacked along a footpath at around 5:30 AM. We suspect this gang has been targeting early risers,” said a senior police officer familiar with the case.
Paramedics immediately rushed the victim to a nearby hospital, where doctors admitted him in stable condition. Authorities have yet to release his name, citing security and privacy concerns.
The incident comes amid broader concerns over police vulnerability, particularly in areas plagued by increasing street-level gang activity.
Motive of Attack Remains Under Investigation
While the exact motive is still under investigation, authorities believe the attackers may have been conducting a robbery spree. They were targeting commuters and workers headed to early shifts. The officer may have interfered or mistaken a civilian target.
Cases like this echo findings from a Kenya Police Service report, which identified early morning hours as a high-risk window for urban muggings and gang activity.
In related findings, BBC Africa has previously documented rising incidents of gang violence in coastal towns, often linked to unemployment and organized youth crime networks.
Police Launch Security Crackdown in Kiwadani
In response to the attack, the Kilifi County Security Committee has announced a targeted security operation aimed at flushing out criminal gangs operating in and around Kiwadani.
The crackdown follows a similar response in Mombasa’s Majengo and Likoni areas, where increased patrols led to a temporary drop in gang-related crimes earlier this year, as highlighted in a Nation.Africa investigative report.
Residents Urged to Remain Alert and Cooperate
Kilifi police are urging residents—especially those walking early in the morning or late at night—to remain vigilant and avoid using isolated routes.
“We are asking the public to work with us. Report any suspicious activity before it turns deadly,” said an officer attached to the Kilifi County DCI unit.
Anonymous tips can be submitted via the DCI tip-off portal, or reported directly to the nearest police station.
