Detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) have launched an investigation into Laikipia County Assembly Speaker Lantano Nabaala over allegations of forging his academic credentials.

The anti-graft officers camped at the Assembly for the better part of the day, beginning with an early morning raid at Nabaala’s official residence in Muthaiga before proceeding to his office. According to EACC Central Region boss Japheth Baithalu, the Speaker was grilled for hours as detectives sought evidence to substantiate the claims.

“The purpose of the grilling was to gather evidence to substantiate the allegations,” Baithalu said. “The commission will issue an official statement on the nature of the investigations.”

Long-Running Forgery Allegations

For over a year, Speaker Nabaala has faced accusations of securing his position using fake academic papers. A section of MCAs previously wrote to the EACC urging a formal probe into his qualifications.

Nabaala assumed office in September 2022 after winning a second round of voting by MCAs. He secured 14 out of 21 votes against eight other aspirants.

Anti-Graft Agencies in the Spotlight

The EACC has been under public pressure to intensify investigations into cases of alleged academic forgery and corruption involving high-ranking officials across the country. Such probes are seen as a test of Kenya’s commitment to integrity in public office.
