Detectives are investigating an incident where a 79-year-old woman was found dead after an arson in his house in Kithasyu, Kibwezi, Makueni County. The victim who was  identified as Rael Ndunda, died after unknown assailants allegedly set her house on fire while she was asleep.

Mob Justice Over Witchcraft Accusations

According to police reports, the  woman was accused of practicing witchcraft by locals. The fatal attack occurred on the night of Saturday, August 2, sending shockwaves across the community.

“The woman was asleep in her home when the assailants torched the house. We believe this was a planned attack fueled by local beliefs,” said one of the investigating officers.

The incident echoes a worrying trend in Kenya where older individuals, often women, are targeted over unproven witchcraft allegations. A similar pattern has been noted in Kisii County and parts of the Coast region, raising concerns among human rights organizations and local leaders alike.

Police Vow Swift Justice

Officers confirmed that investigations are ongoing, and they have launched a manhunt for the suspects .

The remains were moved to Makindu General Hospital mortuary for autopsy.

Police term mob lynching a criminal offense and want suspects to be surrendered to authorities for prosecution.

Mob Justice Still a Threat to the Rule of Law

Despite repeated crackdowns, mob justice remains prevalent in rural Kenya, with many residents citing frustration over delayed legal processes. However, civil society groups and legal experts warn that such actions only perpetuate violence and impunity.

“This is not just about superstition; it’s about a justice system failing the vulnerable. The state must do more to protect its citizens,” said a spokesperson from the Independent Medico Legal Unit (IMLU).
