Kakamega County, Kenya – August 12, 2025 – Authorities in Navakholo, Kakamega County are investigating the suspected suicide of a man being held in a police cell at Bundonga police post.

Incident at Bundonga Police Post

The deceased, identified as Raymond Nachibati Wawire, had been arrested on Saturday, August 9, 2025, for allegedly assaulting his wife at a shopping centre near his home.

According to police reports, Wawire was found hanging from the rafters of the cell using a tracksuit string tied around his neck. The discovery was made during routine checks by officers at the station.

IPOA Joins Investigation

Following the incident,  officials from the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) had been notified to take part in the investigation. IPOA is mandated to independently investigate police misconduct and custodial deaths in Kenya, as outlined on their official website.

Body Moved for Autopsy

Wawire’s body has since been transferred to the Kakamega County Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary pending post-mortem.

Concerns Over Custodial Deaths in Kenya

This case comes amid growing concerns over deaths in police custody across the country. Rights groups have urged authorities to enhance monitoring systems in detention facilities to protect detainees’ welfare.
