Nairobi, Kenya, September 12, 2025 – Interdicted Police Constable Klinzy Barasa, accused of fatally shooting hawker Boniface Kariuki in Nairobi’s Central Business District on June 17, 2025, will remain in custody until October 6.

Barasa, who has undergone a mental assessment and was declared fit to stand trial, denied the murder charges during his court appearance. His legal team has since applied for bail.

On Tuesday, the High Court ordered that the officer stay in detention until the court delivers a ruling on his bail application.

Background of the Case

Kariuki, a well-known mask vendor, was allegedly shot dead during an altercation in the Nairobi CBD, sparking public outrage and renewed calls for police accountability.

The case has since attracted close public attention, with human rights groups demanding justice for the slain trader.
