Nairobi, Kenya, September 12, 2025 – Police officers deployed to provide security during the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) have finally been paid by the Local Organising Committee (LOC), but the amounts received have triggered anger and frustration.
The officers claim they were initially promised a daily allowance of KSh12,000 to cater for transport, meals, and other logistical needs while on duty. However, the figure was later slashed to KSh3,300, and after unexplained deductions, they reportedly received as little as KSh300 per day.
Officers Cry Foul
Security personnel who worked during the continental football tournament feel betrayed and shortchanged, arguing that the final payout does not match the intensity and risks of their work.
Some officers have gone further, accusing their seniors of pocketing part of the allowances, an allegation that has fueled calls for investigations.
“We worked long hours to ensure the safety of players, fans, and officials, but what we have received is a mockery,” said one officer who requested anonymity.
Demand for Transparency
The affected officers are now demanding full accountability from the LOC and police leadership on how the allowances were processed and distributed.
The controversy adds to a growing list of concerns around management of funds in major sporting events in Kenya, raising questions about transparency in public spending.
