Leaders of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) have cautioned against the growing scramble for political dominance in the Luo community following the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, the party’s long-serving leader.
ODM delegates met on Friday at Opoda Farm in Bondo, the late Odinga’s ancestral home, where they emphasized that there is no leadership vacuum in the community or within the party.
Wanga: No Leadership Vacuum in Luo Nyanza
Speaking at the meeting, Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, who also serves as ODM chairperson, said the Luo community remains united under the party’s leadership and warned against divisive succession politics.
“The leadership of Luo Nyanza has no vacuum because once Dr. Oburu has taken over the mantle of party leadership, he is the same person who will guide the community going forward,” said Wanga.
She urged patience and solidarity, stressing that unity is vital during this transitional period following Raila’s passing.
Kajwang’ Warns Ambitious Politicians
Ruaraka MP T.J. Kajwang’ also issued a firm warning—appearing to target younger politicians such as Embakasi East MP Babu Owino—who have shown interest in positioning themselves as Raila’s successors.
“Our father Raila has left us in good hands. I can see the chairman of the Luo Council of Elders here, and I know we shall continue to speak in one voice,” Kajwang’ said.
He added that early power struggles could undermine the cohesion and unity that Raila Odinga championed for decades within Luo politics.
Oburu Oginga Steps In
ODM leaders affirmed that Siaya Senator Dr. Oburu Oginga, Raila’s elder brother, has temporarily taken over the ODM leadership mantle and is best placed to guide both the party and the Luo community through this period.
The leaders further called on members to focus on preserving Raila’s legacy rather than engaging in political rivalry.
