Nairobi, Kenya | Tuesday, August 25, 2026: Kenya’s United Opposition has agreed to rally behind a single presidential candidate in the 2027 General Election in a bid to mount a united challenge against President William Ruto.
The opposition principals reached the agreement on Monday, August 24, following a retreat where they also committed to remaining together throughout the process of identifying their joint presidential candidate.
The leaders said they would sign a Personal Unity Pledge and a Coalition Unity Agreement, committing them to support whoever emerges from the agreed candidate-selection process.
The development marks a significant step in the opposition’s efforts to avoid splitting its vote ahead of the August 2027 presidential election.
Opposition Leaders Commit to Supporting One Candidate
In a joint statement issued after the retreat, the principals said each leader would participate in the process of identifying the coalition’s presidential candidate and subsequently campaign for the person selected.
“We have unanimously agreed to execute a Personal Unity Pledge and a Coalition Unity Agreement, through which each Principal commits, individually and collectively, to remain united, participate in a credible process of selecting our Presidential candidate, and thereafter fully support and campaign for the candidate chosen to carry our common mandate into the 2027 General Election.”
The leaders said their decision was guided by what they described as the need to put the interests of Kenya ahead of individual political ambitions.
“Our answer today is unequivocal: Kenya comes first,” they said.
The opposition has also declared its intention to prevent President Ruto from securing a second term.
How the Opposition Will Pick Its Candidate
The question of who will carry the opposition ticket remains unresolved.

The agreement to support whoever emerges is therefore intended to settle one of the biggest challenges that has historically faced opposition coalitions: agreeing on a single presidential flagbearer and maintaining unity after the decision.
Linda Mwananchi Holds Parallel Retreat
The Nairobi meeting came only hours after the Linda Mwananchi faction held its own retreat in Limuru, Kiambu County, as the political group continues efforts to establish a vehicle through which it can contest the 2027 election.
The faction has been discussing its political identity and options for operating as an organised political formation.
The developments come as Kenya’s political parties and movements position themselves ahead of the next General Election, with the legal and administrative requirements for participating in elections becoming increasingly important.
Linda Mwananchi Considers Political Party Options
The group has reportedly faced difficulties in registering the Linda Mwananchi Movement as a political party and is considering adopting an existing party.
One of the parties reportedly under consideration is the Ukombozi People’s Party (UPP), which has been associated with Embakasi East MP Babu Owino.
The question of the political vehicle is particularly important because candidates and political formations must operate within Kenya’s electoral and political-party framework.
Sifuna Dismisses Concerns Over Political Vehicle
Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, who attended the Limuru retreat, dismissed concerns over whether the movement would secure a political vehicle for the 2027 contest.
Sifuna argued that the strength of the movement lies in its supporters rather than the particular political party through which they may eventually contest the election.
His remarks came as members of the movement continue discussions over its structure and political direction.
Orengo Linked to 2027 Presidential Ambitions
Siaya Governor James Orengo is also reported to have expressed interest in contesting the 2027 presidential election under the Linda Mwananchi banner.
His reported interest adds another potential name to an opposition field that is yet to settle on a single presidential candidate.
However, the Linda Mwananchi discussions remain separate from the United Opposition’s agreement to identify and support one joint presidential candidate.
Opposition Unity Faces Its Biggest Test
The immediate challenge will be agreeing on a credible method for choosing the joint presidential candidate and ensuring that all principals honour their commitment once the candidate is selected.
For the opposition, a single candidate could provide a clearer alternative to President Ruto. However, the success of the arrangement will ultimately depend on whether the political leaders can maintain their agreement when individual presidential ambitions and party interests come into play.
The 2027 General Election is scheduled for August 2027, with the opposition expected to continue negotiating its alliances and political structures in the months ahead.
