Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna has hit back at President William Ruto over his remarks that the late Raila Odinga was his only formidable competitor, saying the Head of State will be in for a shock in the 2027 General Election.
Speaking during an ODM delegates’ meeting in Mombasa on Saturday, Sifuna said the party is already preparing to field a presidential candidate in 2027, following the late Odinga’s directive before his passing.
“Baba told us to prepare for 2027 so that we can present our own candidate. If we decide to field our party leader, we’ll win. If we say even the Secretary-General should run, we’ll win early in the morning,” said Sifuna.
‘Ruto Will Be Surprised’
Sifuna dismissed Ruto’s assertion that no other opposition figure could match his political strength, declaring that ODM remains a formidable political force capable of surprising the President at the polls.
“Some people are saying only Baba could defeat them. But as one MP said, mtoto wa simba ni simba — they will be very surprised,” he added, drawing cheers from delegates.
Clarifies UDA-ODM Cooperation
Addressing the ongoing bipartisan talks and cooperation between ODM and the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA), Sifuna clarified that the engagement does not amount to a coalition.
“Every party retains its independence. What we are discussing are issues of national interest, not power-sharing,” he said.
Warns Against Premature Campaigns
The ODM Secretary-General also cautioned members against using the upcoming November 27 by-election campaigns to push for “two-term” slogans or personal political agendas.
He emphasized that all major 2027 decisions — including the choice of ODM’s presidential flag bearer — will be made collectively, reflecting the will of the majority rather than a few influential individuals.
