A driver and three passengers were robbed of cash and other valuables after a gang posing as passengers hijacked their vehicle in Ekerenyo area, Nyamira County.
According to a police report, the driver told officers that he had set off for Nairobi from Rongo using his Probox taxi when he picked up two passengers for a fee. Upon reaching Kisii Town, he picked up six more men who claimed they were heading to Nyamira Town.
Unknown to the driver, the six men were thugs.
The victims said that upon reaching the Konate area, the suspects revealed their true intentions, took control of the vehicle and diverted it towards the Keroka route, as some of the gang members robbed the occupants.
Police said the victims were robbed of mobile phones, Sh7,000 in cash, shoes and food items. One of the stolen phones reportedly had an M-Shwari account holding Sh200,000.
The ordeal came to an end after the vehicle developed a puncture along the Magonga–Ekerenyo road, forcing the suspects to abandon the car and flee on foot.
The driver and passengers were left shaken but unharmed.
Police said investigations have been launched to trace the suspects and recover the stolen items.
