Meta has permanently deleted the Instagram account of US-based Tanzanian activist Mange Kimambi, a prominent critic of President Samia Suluhu’s government. Kimambi revealed that she lost access to her account, which had over 2.7 million followers, on Wednesday, December 3.

In addition to Instagram, Kimambi says she has also been banned from accessing WhatsApp, another platform owned by Meta.

The account deletion follows similar issues faced by Maria Sarungi, another activist critical of the Suluhu administration, who says her Instagram account has been shadow-banned, preventing her followers in Tanzania from viewing her posts.

Both Kimambi and Sarungi have been among the most vocal Tanzanian activists raising concerns over government policies and actions, using social media as a platform for advocacy.
