A police officer has been arrested after allegedly shooting dead a reveller during a late-night altercation at a bar in Kenyenya, Kisii County.
The shocking incident occurred on the night of Friday, December 12, 2025, at a popular drinking joint in Magena Shopping Centre, police and witnesses confirmed.
The victim, identified as Moses Okeyo, 28, was reportedly enjoying drinks with friends when a disagreement erupted between him and a police officer attached to the Critical Infrastructure Police Unit (CIPU) based at the Nairobi headquarters.
According to eyewitness accounts, the argument quickly escalated, with the officer allegedly drawing his Beretta pistol and firing a single shot at close range.
Police said the bullet entered through the back of Okeyo’s head and exited through the top of his left eye, killing him instantly.
Officers who responded to the scene found Okeyo lying in a pool of blood inside the bar at around 11:00pm. A spent cartridge was also recovered from the scene.
Following the shooting, panic erupted among revellers, who fled for safety before regrouping and turning on the officer. Witnesses said the crowd cornered and stoned him, leaving him seriously injured.
The officer was later rescued by responding police officers and rushed to hospital, where he remains admitted under tight police guard.
Police also recovered the officer’s firearm, which had 14 rounds of ammunition, from members of the public.
Okeyo was a known service provider in the area, offering specialised waste management services, including septic tank and pit latrine exhaustion at Riokindo Girls Secondary School.
His body was moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy as investigations continue.
Police have termed the shooting an isolated incident and say investigations are ongoing to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the fatal encounter.
