Seven people were killed early Sunday morning after a matatu collided head-on with a truck at Miasenyi in Taita-Taveta County, along the busy Nairobi–Mombasa highway.

According to eyewitnesses, the Kinatwa Sacco matatu was headed toward Mombasa and was reportedly overtaking several vehicles when it rammed into an oncoming truck. The impact left seven passengers, including the matatu driver, dead on the spot.

The bodies of the deceased have been moved to the Moi Referral Hospital–Voi mortuary, while survivors of the crash have also been rushed to the same facility for emergency treatment.

Police have launched investigations into the incident to establish the exact sequence of events and determine whether speeding or reckless driving played a role in the deadly smash.

Authorities are now urging motorists to exercise extreme caution on the roads as holiday travel surges ahead of the Christmas season, a period historically marked by increased road accidents.
