Kenyan actor Lenana Kariba has hit back at critics who labelled him a “kept man” after he revealed that he is a stay-at-home dad following his relocation to the United Kingdom to live with his mzungu wife, Helen.

The celebrated Kenyan actor recently opened up about his family arrangement, explaining that while his wife works a corporate job in the UK and handles the family’s primary financial responsibilities, he has chosen to stay home to care for their young daughter, Ava.

Why Lenana Chose to Stay Home

Kariba clarified that the decision was intentional and rooted in family values, not financial dependency. He noted that he still earns income through acting projects and content creation in Kenya, but prioritised being present during his daughter’s formative years.

“I chose this arrangement so I can bond with my daughter as she grows,” he previously explained.

Clapping Back at Critics

Taking to Facebook, the actor addressed netizens who have repeatedly commented that he has been “kept” by his wife, a phrase commonly expressed in Swahili as “umewekwa.”

“‘Umewekwa’ or ‘you’ve been kept’. I’ve gotten a few of these words said to me about being a stay-at-home dad. I get that some people still have different views about gender roles — even today, somehow,” Kariba wrote.

He went on to passionately defend his choice, saying that being a stay-at-home father has been one of the most fulfilling experiences of his life.

“Being a stay-at-home dad is truly one of the most rewarding experiences I could have ever imagined. Watching my daughter grow and learn every single day fills my heart with so much joy and pride. I absolutely cherish every moment we get,” he added.

Challenging Gender Stereotypes

Kariba’s response has sparked conversations online about changing gender roles, parenting, and modern family dynamics. Many fans praised the actor for breaking societal stereotypes and normalising involved fatherhood, while others acknowledged that traditional views still shape public perception.

Public Support Grows

Following his post, numerous followers applauded Kariba for prioritising family and embracing hands-on parenting, with some describing him as a role model for modern fathers.

The actor’s stance highlights a growing shift where parenting responsibilities are shared or reversed, especially in households where one partner’s career demands take precedence.
