A 30-year-old man was shot and killed by gunmen as he left a funeral vigil in Kehancha, Migori County, with mourners later lynching one of the suspected attackers, police said.
The incident occurred on the night of Tuesday, January 20, when the victim, identified as Bernard Musaba, was walking home from the vigil.
Police said Musaba was confronted by three men riding on a motorcycle, who were armed with an AK-47 rifle and crude weapons. The assailants shot him in the head, chest and legs, killing him on the spot.
Mourners at the funeral heard the gunshots and gave chase. They caught up with one of the suspects and stoned him to death, police said. The suspect was found with two identification cards bearing different names.
Officers recovered three spent cartridges at the scene. Both bodies were moved to the mortuary pending post-mortem examinations and identification.
Police have launched a manhunt for the remaining gunmen, who escaped on foot after abandoning their motorcycle. The motive for the attack has not yet been established.
