Seven people were killed and 11 others injured on Monday following a tragic road accident involving a truck and two matatus at Kikopey area in Gilgil, Nakuru County.
According to police, the truck was heading towards Nakuru when the driver lost control and veered into the opposite lane, where it rammed into the two oncoming matatus.
Gilgil Sub-county Police Commander Wilstone Mwakio confirmed the incident, saying five people died on the spot due to the impact of the crash. Two more victims later succumbed to their injuries while undergoing treatment at St. Mary’s Hospital in Gilgil.
The injured were rushed to nearby health facilities for treatment as police officers and emergency responders moved to the scene to manage traffic and investigate the cause of the accident.
Authorities have launched investigations into the incident as calls grow for motorists to exercise caution along the busy Gilgil–Nakuru highway, which has been the site of several fatal accidents in the past.
