A 23-year-old man has died by suicide at Cheplanget Police Station in Cheplanget Ward, Kericho County, after reportedly arriving at the station while intoxicated.
Police sources identified the deceased as Edmond Rono, a resident of a nearby village.
Found Hanging Inside Police Station Compound
According to reports, Rono allegedly hanged himself using the edge of his sweater, which he tied to an electricity earth wire attached to a power pole within the station compound.
Sources said the young man had arrived at the station in the early hours of Thursday night while riding a motorcycle. Officers on duty reportedly observed that he appeared intoxicated and decided to place him in the cells pending further interrogation.
However, he later managed to escape, leaving his motorcycle behind at the station.
Body Discovered at Dawn
At dawn on Friday, officers discovered Rono’s lifeless body dangling from an electric pole inside the police station compound. It is believed that he may have returned to the compound after escaping from custody.
The incident has raised questions about security procedures at the facility.
Family Says He Had Previous Suicide Attempt
Family members of the deceased revealed that he had previously attempted to take his own life but was restrained at the time.
The body was later removed from the scene and transferred to Kapkatet Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examination.
Investigations Underway
Authorities have launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident, including how the deceased allegedly escaped from custody and re-entered the station compound unnoticed.
