Three police officers and a civilian have tragically lost their lives following a fatal road accident along the busy Matuu–Mwingi Road in Machakos County.
The deadly crash occurred on Sunday evening, February 15, near Mwatungo Primary School, sending shockwaves through the local community.
Police Vehicle Reportedly Lost Control
According to preliminary investigations, the police vehicle is believed to have developed mechanical problems before the driver lost control. The vehicle reportedly rolled multiple times, resulting in severe injuries to the occupants.
One officer died instantly at the scene of the accident. Two others succumbed to injuries while receiving treatment at Kithyoko Level Three Hospital and Matuu Level Four Hospital, respectively.
A civilian who was traveling in the police vehicle was also pronounced dead after being rushed to hospital.
One Officer Survives
One police officer survived the crash and is currently receiving medical attention at Matuu Level Four Hospital. Authorities are yet to release the identities of the deceased as investigations continue.
Rising Road Safety Concerns
The tragic incident has reignited concerns over road safety and the mechanical condition of government vehicles operating on Kenyan highways. The Matuu–Mwingi Road has previously been flagged as a high-risk stretch due to frequent accidents.
Authorities are expected to conduct a thorough investigation to determine the exact cause of the mechanical failure and whether negligence played any role in the fatal crash.
