Three people have been confirmed dead and at least 19 others injured following a grisly road accident along the Kisumu–Bondo Road at Otonglo, involving a vehicle reportedly linked to the motorcade of Aden Duale, Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Health.

According to eyewitnesses, the crash occurred when a Toyota Prado believed to be part of the CS’s convoy attempted to overtake another vehicle before colliding with a 14-seater public service vehicle matatu and a passenger-filled tuk-tuk.

Two people died on the spot, while a third succumbed to injuries while being rushed to hospital.

Motorcade Was Heading to Airport

Witnesses said the convoy was speeding toward Kisumu International Airport, where the CS was scheduled to catch a flight.

However, in a statement, the Ministry of Health (Kenya) said the Cabinet Secretary only came across the accident scene while travelling and did not confirm that any vehicle from his motorcade was involved in the crash.

“The motorcade of the Cabinet Secretary for Health, Aden Duale, today stopped at the scene of a road traffic accident at Otonglo, near the Molasses Plant in Kisumu, where the Cabinet Secretary mobilised an emergency medical response to assist the victims,” the ministry said in part.

Injured Taken to Referral Hospital

According to the statement, more than 19 injured victims were rushed to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital for urgent medical treatment.

At the time of the incident, Duale was travelling to the airport from Rarieda after attending a thanksgiving ceremony for Ouma Oluga, the Principal Secretary for Medical Services.

Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident.
