The High Court of Kenya sitting in Embu County has ordered a recount of votes in the Mbeere North by-election, which was won by Leo Wamuthende.

Court Orders Ballot Scrutiny

In its ruling, the court directed that all ballot boxes from the election be reopened, with votes subjected to fresh scrutiny and recount.

The decision follows a petition filed by Newton Kariuki Ndwiga, also known as Newton Karish, who challenged the outcome of the November 27, 2025 by-election.

Election Dispute

Ndwiga moved to court seeking to overturn Wamuthende’s victory, raising concerns over the credibility of the electoral process.

The recount is expected to determine the accuracy of the initial results and could potentially impact the final outcome of the closely watched contest.

What Happens Next

The court-ordered recount marks a significant step in resolving the dispute, with electoral officials now required to verify the ballots under judicial supervision.

The outcome of the exercise will play a key role in either affirming or overturning Wamuthende’s win in the Mbeere North seat.
