The Independent Policing Oversight Authority has launched investigations into the death of a 24-year-old man while in police custody at Ngegu Police Station in Rangwe Sub-County.

According to police reports, the incident was recorded on May 3, 2025, involving Wycliff Omondi Dengu, who had been arrested over allegations of stock theft.

Police said the deceased was being held alone in a cell when the incident occurred.

Preliminary findings indicate that Dengu allegedly died by suicide after reportedly hanging himself using a string tied to a ventilation grill inside the male holding area.

His body was later discovered inside the cell.

Authorities confirmed that the family had been informed about the incident, while IPOA has since taken over investigations as required in all cases involving deaths in police custody.

The body was moved to Homa Bay Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary pending a postmortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing.
