Detectives have launched investigations into a fatal workplace accident after a quarry worker was killed by a falling rock in Ithanga/Kakuzi Sub-County, Murang’a County.
According to police, the incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon at the Salvation Army Quarry.
Officers who visited the scene established that Maurice Gitonga, a 26-year-old man from Embu County, died after being struck on the head by a large rock that rolled down from a cliff.
Preliminary investigations indicate that a machine shovel operating at the top of the quarry had dislodged the rock while levelling the area.
The rock reportedly rolled down the cliff and hit the deceased as he stood next to a lorry, killing him on the spot.
The body was later moved to General Kago Mortuary pending a postmortem examination.
Authorities said investigations are ongoing, with detectives expected to examine safety procedures and compliance measures at the quarry site.
