A grieving family in Ruai is demanding justice following the death of their 23-year-old daughter, Mercy Wanjiru Kimani, who was allegedly attacked after attending a birthday celebration at a lounge along Mombasa Road.
According to the family, Mercy had been with her mother after a church service when she received a phone call inviting her to a friend’s birthday party at Tunnel Lounge along Mombasa Road.
The following day, she was reportedly found unconscious about three kilometres from the entertainment spot with severe injuries, including a deep cut on the head and lower abdomen. Reports further indicate that both of her arms had been broken.
She was initially rushed to a dispensary in Mukuru before being transferred to Thika Level 4 Hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries.
According to accounts shared by the family, CCTV footage from the club allegedly captured Mercy spending time with friends before one of them reportedly left the venue in an Uber, leaving her behind.
Additional footage is said to show Mercy attempting to negotiate transport fare with a boda boda rider in an effort to get home. However, the two allegedly failed to agree on the fare, after which the rider picked another customer and left the scene.
The circumstances surrounding what happened afterward remain unclear.
The tragic incident has sparked outrage online, with many Kenyans calling for thorough investigations and justice for the young woman.
Authorities are expected to continue investigations to establish the sequence of events leading to her death and identify those responsible.
