Five people have lost their lives and three others sustained serious injuries following a devastating road accident at the notorious Makotelo black spot along the Webuye–Bungoma highway.

According to police, the crash involved a public service vehicle (PSV) and a trailer that collided head-on under circumstances that are yet to be established.

The PSV was reportedly travelling towards Eldoret when the fatal collision occurred.

Emergency responders and police officers rushed to the scene, where five occupants were confirmed dead on the spot due to the severity of the impact.

Three other victims who survived the crash sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Bungoma County Referral Hospital for emergency medical treatment.

The accident occurred at Makotelo, a section of the highway that has previously been associated with numerous road crashes, earning it a reputation as a black spot among motorists and road safety authorities.

Police have launched investigations to establish the exact cause of the collision, including whether factors such as speeding, mechanical failure, poor visibility, or human error may have contributed to the tragedy.

The bodies of the deceased were moved to a mortuary pending identification and notification of next of kin.

The latest crash adds to growing concerns over road safety on major highways across the country, with authorities continuing to urge motorists to exercise caution, observe traffic regulations, and avoid dangerous driving practices.

Further details, including the identities of the victims, are expected to be released once families are informed and investigations progress.
