A campaign truck belonging to the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) was attacked and later set ablaze by hooded men in the Chokereria area of Gilgil on Saturday, intensifying concerns over political violence ahead of the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election.
Videos circulating on social media captured chaotic scenes as armed, masked men travelling in vehicles with concealed or missing registration plates intercepted the DCP campaign truck, forcing supporters to flee.
The footage showed men and women who had been campaigning aboard the truck screaming for help as the attack unfolded.
Several supporters were seen jumping from the moving vehicle before running into nearby areas to escape the assailants.
Another video recorded shortly after the incident showed two men dressed in black pelting the stationary truck with stones before thick smoke began rising from the vehicle in what appeared to be an arson attack.
The truck, which was branded in DCP party colours, sustained extensive damage.
The incident comes amid heightened political tensions in Nyandarua County, where campaigns for the upcoming Ol Kalou by-election have been marked by allegations of intimidation and violence.
In a statement shared on social media, DCP Economic Adviser Peter Mbae accused individuals he described as state-backed operatives of carrying out the attack.
“Our DCP truck was attacked and shot at by state goons at Pembroke on the way to Gilgil, suspected to be police officers in civilian clothes travelling in a Prado and a Subaru,” Mbae claimed.
Authorities had not immediately commented on the allegations as investigations into the incident continued.
