Suna East Member of Parliament Junet Mohammed has alleged that Members of Parliament were bribed to support the impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua in October 2024.

Speaking during a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) convention in Kakamega on Sunday, Junet claimed money was distributed to legislators in both the National Assembly and the Senate before the impeachment vote, which passed by overwhelming majorities.

According to Junet, Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot allegedly coordinated the distribution of the funds.

“Wakati tulikuwa tunafukuza Gachagua kazi, kuna kitu ilitembea hapo. Huko Bunge. Accounting officer alikuwa Aaron Cheruiyot,” he said.

Junet went on to claim that some legislators failed to put the alleged money to good use, urging them to invest in building decent homes instead.

He also accused an unnamed lawmaker of squandering the money on women instead of making meaningful investments.

“Sasa wengine wanatuambia wako na watu, na wanataka kutupeleka kwa mtu sisi tuli-impeach, tulifukuza yeye kazi. Na unajua Waziri, wakati tulikuwa nunafukuza Rigathi Gachagua kazi, kuna kitu ilitembea hapo… huku Bunge, wacha niseme ukweli,” Junet added.

The remarks have intensified political debate, with leaders from both the government and opposition camps using Sunday gatherings to advance competing political narratives ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Junet made the comments during the political convention held in Kakamega County, the home turf of Cabinet Secretary for Co-operatives and MSMEs Development Wycliffe Oparanya.

Neither Aaron Cheruiyot nor other leaders mentioned in the remarks had publicly responded to the allegations at the time of publication.
