Two construction workers lost their lives while two others were injured after a mudslide buried workers at a sewer line construction site in Ngara, Nairobi.
The incident occurred at around 6 p.m. on Thursday in the Tsunami Market area, according to police.
Officers on patrol from Ngara Police Station responded after hearing members of the public calling for help. Upon arriving at the scene, they found residents attempting to rescue workers trapped beneath the collapsed earth.
A rescue team from the Nairobi City County Fire Brigade joined the operation and managed to pull three people from the rubble.
Two of the rescued workers received first aid before they were rushed to Mbagathi Hospital, where they were admitted in stable condition.
A third man, whose identity was not immediately established, reportedly fled the scene after being rescued from the debris.
Two other workers were later pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.
The deceased were identified as 31-year-old Augustine Ochieng and Patrick Nyengenye, who was described by police as a middle-aged man.
Nairobi Regional Police Commander Issa Mohamud confirmed the fatalities, adding that investigations have been launched into the circumstances surrounding the deadly mudslide.
