Gachagua Says Opposition Could Pick 2027 Presidential Candidate After Christmas

Nairobi, August 2026 — Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has hinted that opposition leaders could begin serious discussions on selecting a joint presidential candidate after the Christmas period as preparations for the 2027 General Election gather momentum.

Speaking to journalists at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Wednesday night before departing for the United States, Gachagua said the opposition should currently concentrate on political mobilisation rather than the question of who will fly the coalition’s presidential flag.

Gachagua is expected to meet Kenyans living in the diaspora during his US trip as he continues to build support for the opposition ahead of the 2027 polls.

The former Deputy President expressed confidence that settling on a single presidential candidate would not be a major challenge for the opposition coalition.

“Choosing a single presidential candidate is the easiest of all the challenges that we have ahead of us. We can meet one day for lunch and before dinner we have a candidate,” Gachagua stated.

His remarks suggest that negotiations over the opposition’s flag bearer could take shape after Christmas, with political parties and leaders expected to spend the coming months strengthening their grassroots networks and mobilising supporters.

Gachagua has continued to advocate for opposition unity as political activity intensifies ahead of the 2027 presidential contest.
