Wicknell Chivayo, the controversial Zimbabwean businessman popularly known as “Sir Wicknell,” has built a multi-million dollar business empire despite dropping out of school in Form Two. From his humble beginnings as a teenage wages clerk to a flamboyant tycoon brushing shoulders with African heads of state, Chivayo’s meteoric rise remains one of the most talked-about rags-to-riches stories in Southern Africa.
While his immense wealth, luxury car fleets, and multimillion-dollar government contracts attract heavy public scrutiny, his journey from poverty to power continues to fascinate millions.

Early Life: Tragedy and Dropping Out of School

Born on November 22, 1982, in the Gandami area of Chivhu, Zimbabwe, Chivayo’s early life was marred by severe hardship. Tragedy struck when he was just 10 years old following the death of his father, plunging his family into deep financial distress.
By the time he was in Form Two, the financial strain became unbearable. Unable to afford tuition fees, Chivayo was forced to drop out of school. To keep his family afloat, the 15-year-old took a low-level job as a wages clerk at a local bus company. This early exposure to labor and cash flow laid the foundation for his future business ambitions.

Making the First Million: The Rise of Sir Wicknell

Despite lacking a formal high school education, Chivayo possessed a sharp entrepreneurial instinct. He claims to have made his first million South African Rand (ZAR) by the age of 19 through early cross-border trading and business activities.
By age 23, Chivayo claimed he had reached his first US$1 million. While these early wealth claims remain difficult to independently verify, his subsequent move into large-scale corporate ventures solidifed his status as a serious player in regional commerce.

The Gwanda Solar Project and Intratrek Zimbabwe

Chivayo’s profile rose exponentially when he became associated with Intratrek Zimbabwe, an infrastructure and energy company. The firm secured major government-backed deals, most notably the controversial US$172 million Gwanda Solar Project awarded in 2015.
The mega-project propelled him straight into the center of Zimbabwe’s economic and political circles. Although the multi-million dollar solar project faced intense public scrutiny and legal battles over implementation delays, it firmly established Chivayo as a heavyweight in state-linked procurement.

Flamboyant Lifestyle and Links to African Presidents

Today, the tycoon embraces the nickname “Sir Wicknell” and commands a massive social media following where he routinely showcases an ultra-luxurious lifestyle. He is famous for buying high-end vehicles (including Rolls-Royces, Bentleys, and Mercedes-Benzes) and distributing lavish gifts, cash, and cars to celebrities, religious institutions, public figures, and sports personalities.
Beyond his wealth, Chivayo has successfully cultivated deep political connections across the continent. He has been spotted in the inner circles of several African heads of state, including:
  • President William Ruto of Kenya, with whom he was once filmed sharing a car ride.
  • President Samia Suluhu of Tanzania.
  • King Mswati III of Eswatini.

From a teenage bus clerk to an influential tycoon dining with presidents, Wicknell Chivayo’s life remains a polarizing but undeniably fascinating testament to shifting fortunes in African business.
