The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has opened investigations into the circumstances that led to the shooting of a Maseno University student during Monday’s anti-government protests in Kisumu.

The National Police Service and members of the public have differed on how William Manyange met his death.

A police report about the incident claims that protestors, who included students, had invaded the Maseno police line during the demonstrations, prompting the officers to use live bullets to disperse the rowdy youths. According to the police at least 10 houses were vandalised in the process.

A video doing rounds on the internet however shows the student lying down along the Kisumu Busia highway immediately after being shot. In the video, other protestors surround the student while asking for an ambulance.

IPOA is set to issue a statement about the shooting later Tuesday.
