Butula Boys High School were crowned Western Region Secondary Schools 15s Rugby champions after beating Vihiga High School 12-7 in a hotly contested final at St Mary’s Mundika High School.
Butula secured a chance in the final after Western region 15s Rugby champions Koyonzo Secondary School were disqualified for fielding an ineligible player. This was the second time Butula met with Vihiga High, the first time being in group stages which was the opening match that ended in a barren draw.
Koyonzo who were the favourite to win the tournament from day one were disqualified and will face disciplinary action as stipulated in the KSSSA Sports rules.
Butula head coach Shimenga Libondo commended the boys for putting up a fighting spirit to withstand second half pressure to emerge champions.
“I want to thank our able opponents Vihiga for their spirited fight to last minute, even though we have won the match, we will work on our weakness if we must represent the country in East African games in Rwanda late this year,” noted Libondo.
Friends School Kamusinga High School basketball team outshined their opponents with skills to retain their title after beating Sigalame High School 55-52 in a necktie final that attracted hundreds.
Meanwhile, an appeal against Friends School Kamusinga basketball team made by St. Peter’s Mumias has been dismissed according to Western Region Secondary School Games Chairperson Martin Waswa.
“I appeal to all school principals and coaches, let us nurture talents and avoid fielding ineligible players. We must stick to the rules of the game,” said Waswa.
In the girls’ basketball final, Butere Girls High School saw off their perennial rivals Tigoi Girls Highs School 80-52. Tigoi, who were the defending champions, lost 44-32 in their opening Group ‘A’ encounter against Butere Girls.
Musingu Boys High School and Tigoi Girls High School were crowned hockey regional champions. In handball, Moi Girls Kamusinga from Bungoma emerged victorious in the final match after beating Aboloi Secondary School 25-12.
Musingu Boys High School from Kakamega are the new regional handball champions after beating defending champions St Luke’s Kimilili Boys High School in a controversial encounter that saw the loser file an appeal after the match.
