Gundogan, who made 304 appearances for City and captained the team to a Treble last season, referred to his time at the club as the “greatest experience” of his career.
In an emotional message, he expressed his gratitude for being part of the City family and stated that he would always carry the club in his heart. Gundogan’s decision to leave City marks the end of a successful tenure in which he won 14 major honors, including five Premier League titles.
Gundogan’s move to Barcelona provides him with a new challenge and environment after his time in Manchester.
As Guardiola’s first signing for City, Gundogan played a pivotal role in the team’s transformation into a dominant force in English football. He has proven to be a player for big occasions. This is exemplified by his brace on the final day of the 2021-22 season that secured the Premier League title for City.
Additionally, his two goals in the FA Cup final against Manchester United, including the fastest final goal in the competition’s history, helped City clinch the trophy.
Txiki Begiristain, the director of football at Manchester City, paid tribute to Gundogan, acknowledging his significant contributions to the club’s recent successes. Begiristain praised Gundogan’s intelligence, leadership, and commitment, both on and off the field, highlighting his inspirational impact on everyone at the club.
“Gundogan has left a lasting legacy at Manchester City. The entire club wishes him well in his future endeavors,” states Begiristain.
