President William Ruto held a private meeting with Samuel Kamau Macharia on Tuesday, 27 June 2023, at State House, Nairobi. Mr. Macharia is the chairman of Royal Media Services (RMS).
According to sources close to the presidency, Ruto allowed only Macharia, who is considered a close confidant of Azimio la Umoja leader Raila Odinga, into the meeting. This surprised Ruto’s allies, as Macharia was accused of opposing Ruto during the intense campaigns leading up to the 2022 General Election.
Although the details of the meeting were not disclosed, sources stated that it was a personal affair between Ruto and Macharia. After the meeting, a photo of Macharia and Emmanuel Talam was widely shared on the internet, sparking debate. Mr. Talam is the Press Secretary of the Presidential Communication Service (PCS).
Mr. Talam confirmed the meeting with Macharia at State House. He explained that he took the photo out of admiration and respect for Macharia. Talam stated that Mr. Macharia gave him his first job as a journalist at Royal Media Services. He, therefore, wanted to show his appreciation.
Macharia is recognized as a prominent figure in the media, business, and political sectors. During the lead-up to the August 9, 2022, Presidential Election, Macharia supported Raila Odinga as an Azimio La Umoja candidate. The businessman exuded confidence that ODM leader Raila Odinga will win the 2022 presidential election.
The media mogul had said he “hardly makes political mistakes,” when he chooses to endorse a candidate for an elective seat.
Mr Macharia even committed resources to support the former premier’s bid for presidency. He moved around the country in caravans accompanied by musicians while drumming up support for Raila.
However, he emphasized that his media outlets were independent and would not engage in partisan politics. Macharia stated that his political views and preferences were separate from his businesses, which were managed by impartial professionals.
