Gor Mahia FC, popularly known as K’ogalo or Sirkal, have been crowned the champions of the 2022-2023 Kenyan Premier League season. The champions carried the title home after a resounding 4-1 victory over Nairobi City Stars in the final match held at Kasarani Stadium on Sunday, 25 June 2023.
With this emphatic win, K’Ogalo secured their twentieth league title since the club’s establishment in 1968, narrowly edging out Tusker FC by a single point in the race for the championship.
Gor Mahia had previously clinched the league title in the 2019-2020 season, which was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The match against City Stars proved challenging for Gor Mahia, as they had to rally from a goal down to secure the victory. Samuel Kapen scored for City Stars shortly after halftime, but Benson Omala equalized for Gor Mahia minutes later. Peter Lwasa, Austin Odhiambo, and a late goal from Alpha Onyango sealed the victory for Gor Mahia.
Tusker lets title slip
As Gor Mahia players and their fans celebrated the memorable moment at Kasarani National Stadium, the Tusker players left Mumias Sports Complex with heavy hearts, having witnessed the league title slip away from their grasp.
Despite defeating Vihiga Bullets 4-0 in their final match, Tusker FC was unable to retain the league title they had won in the 2020-2021 season.
Stewart Omondi’s brace propelled Tusker to a significant away victory, with Deogratious Ojok and Shami Mwinyi contributing to the goal tally.
It was a bittersweet moment for Tusker players as they reflected on their strong performance but fell short in their title defense. Meanwhile, Gor Mahia rejoiced in their well-deserved triumph as they added another chapter to their storied history in Kenyan football.
