The number of fatalities in the Londiani junction road accident has increased to 51 following the recovery of two additional bodies from the wreckage of the trailer.
According to the Kericho County Health Chief Executive Officer (CEC), a total of 51 bodies have been received at the mortuaries of Kericho County Hospital and Londiani Sub-county hospital as of Saturday morning.
In addition, twenty-one individuals have suffered severe injuries and are currently undergoing treatment at Kericho County Hospital.
Authorities have initiated a search for the driver of the truck that collided with seven vehicles at the Londiani junction along the Kericho-Nakuru Road.
The truck that was traveling from Nakuru towards Kericho lost control and rammed into several matatus, private vehicles and motorcycles. It also crashed into hawkers by the roadside on the Muhoroni turn-off.
Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has today revealed that the truck which caused the accident is registered in Rwanda. The truck’s brakes are said to have failed as it descended a slope on the highway.
“It is difficult to know the roadworthiness of the truck at this stage as we will have to engage the Rwandan government on this,” said Murkomen.
