At Sh25 million, The Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class Coupe is a curvier, less practical, and faster version of the GLE-Class SUV.
Its style and price make it a polarizing choice, but there’s no doubt that it’s a formidable performer and competes with other midsize fastback SUVs like the BMW X6 and Audi Q8.
The GLE Coupe comes in two flavors, both with a nine-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive.
GLE53 models harness a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six, which pairs with a mild hybrid system for 429 hp and 384 lb-ft of torque. Zero to 60 mph is dispatched in 5.2 seconds, and fuel economy checks in at a mediocre 17/21 mpg city/highway.
The 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 in the GLE63 S makes an astonishing 602 hp and 627 lb-ft. Zero to 60 mph takes 3.5 seconds, and the quarter mile is over in under 12 seconds. Efficiency dives even further to 15/19 mpg.
The GLE Coupe seats five, and the back row is comfortable for adults. Still, the GLE Coupe’s sloping roofline means compromising on interior space. The traditional GLE SUV boasts 33.3 cubic feet behind the second row, compared to 27.5 cubic feet in the Coupe. Similarly, the SUV boasts 74.9 cubic feet with the second-row seats folded while the Coupe maxes out at 63.2 cubic feet. This is not an unusual scenario among fastback SUVs. The BMW X6, for example, loses about 13 cubic feet of total cargo capacity compared to the X5.
