Jay-Z’s mom, Gloria Carter, tied the knot with her longtime girlfriend, Roxanne Wilshire, in a star-studded wedding ceremony that included Jay-Z and his wife, Beyoncé, who took a break from her Renaissance Tour to attend the nuptials, and their daughter, Blue Ivy.
The wedding, which took place at Tribeca 360° in Manhattan on Sunday, was full of other all-star attendees, including Kelly Rowland, Tyler Perry, Good Morning America co-anchor Robin Roberts, and Beyoncé’s mother, Tina Knowles.
Mama Carter came out as a lesbian back in 2017, and Jay-Z showed his support with a song called “Smile,” where she made an appearance and talked about “living in the shadows” as a gay woman.
In the song, Jay-Z showed his support by saying, “Mama had four kids, but she’s a lesbian / Had to pretend so long that she’s a thespian / Had to hide in the closet, so she medicate / Society shame and the pain was too much to take / Cried tears of joy when you fell in love / Don’t matter to me if it’s a him or her / I just want to see you smile through all the hate.”
Mama Carter also serves as the CEO of the Shawn Carter Foundation, which was founded in 2002 between mother and son and provides financial assistance to high schoolers and undergraduate students who have shown academic potential but lack the necessary financials to pursue higher education.
