Lawyer Miguna Miguna has announced that he applied for the vacant Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) position in Kenya.

The position became vacant in June 2023 after the previous DPP, Noordin Haji, was appointed as the Director General of the National Intelligence Service (NIS). Dr. Miguna announced on his social media pages but did not specify the exact date of his application.

“For the avoidance of any doubt, yes, I have applied for the position of DPP,” he stated.

Miguna assured the public that if appointed as the DPP, he would carry out his duties fairly and pursue suspects accused of breaking the law.

According to the Constitution of Kenya 2010, the DPP is responsible for directing the Inspector-General of the National Police Service (NPS) to investigate allegations of criminal conduct. The DPP also handles the prosecution of criminal cases and related matters.

President William Ruto recently appointed a panel of seven individuals, including Francis Atwoli (Secretary-General of COTU) and Twalib Abdallah Mbarak (EACC boss), to conduct interviews for the new DPP. The panel published the vacancy in local newspapers, with the application deadline set for Wednesday, July 12.

If successful in his application, Miguna would be entitled to a monthly salary of Ksh765,188. However, there is a possibility that the salary could increase to Ksh874,500 if the proposals by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) are approved.

Other benefits include an official car with an engine capacity not exceeding 3000cc, a Ksh8 million car loan, and a mortgage worth Ksh35 million. Additionally, the DPP receives medical health insurance coverage with Ksh10 million for inpatient services and Ksh300,000 for outpatient services, according to the SRC.
