Canada-based Kenyan lawyer Miguna Miguna has warned President William Ruto against attempting to change the constitution terming it as a betrayal of the people who voted for him.

During his campaigns, President Ruto who was opposed to the Building Bridges Initiative that would have changed the constitution promised Kenyans that he will prioritise fixing the ailing economy and reducing the high cost of living.

However, Miguna says that the recent political developments in the country show that the president is doing exactly what he promised not to do.

In order to settle the post-2022 election political impasse, President Ruto has given the go-ahead for bi-partisan talks between Kenya Kwanza and Azimio-One Kenya Coalition.

Pat of the agenda of the talks is the entrenchment of the Office of the Prime Cabinet Secretary and the Office of the Official Opposition Leader into the Constitution. These two changes will most likely require a referendum to change the constitution.

miguna insists that Kenya does not need a constitutional amendment process at the moment, especially not when the economy is in “tatters”, the Shilling is dropping against the U.S. dollar, and the cost of living is worsening.

In 2022, before the general elections, President @WilliamsRuto kept asking Kenyans: “Mnataka tubadilishe uchumi au tubadilishe katiba?”

Kenyans roared – UCHUMI! UCHUMI! UCHUMI!

This was one of those popular rallying cries that propelled @WilliamsRuto to the presidency.

Just…
